Choosing a Moving Company
Researching For Moving Companies
When you are planning a move and think you have found the company that is right for your specific needs there are a few more things you should do before you finalize a mover check. After doing reference checks on the company use the DOT and MC numbers to verify the company is in working order.
There are websites online that will provide the name, addresses, phone numbers, and other contact details of different movers. You can then check their information with the information you have already gathered from your selected moving company to make sure they are consistent. These services will display whether or not a company is in or out of service.
When you are selecting a moving company to assist you in relocating remember that the amount of trucks and drivers are an indication of the extent of their business. The company you choose should be a licensed company that is authorized for hire and to operate interstate and household goods should be a part of their cargo carried list.
You also have the right to examine past inspection records. This is a clear indication that everything is in order or if they have had issues in the past with regulations. You can also use the FMCSA licensing and insurance site to check the company’s insurance and make sure you are truly protected. It is also recommended that you do a thorough search of the company’s business practices with the Better Business Bureau (BBB).
It is your right and duty to be a well informed mover. Double check the estimate given to you by comparing the price with the weight of your items. Be aware of exactly who handles packing and unpacking and if the estimate includes all costs involved. If you are in a situation where you are given a bill that is more expensive than your original written estimate then know that it is against the law to raise the price after a written estimate has been given.
